In the Spotlight

You can find anything, so it's said, on the Internet. That's what makes it a great research resource for budding scholars. That's also what makes it a problem for kids.

Kids, research, and the Internet
What You Need to Know About

Big Internet security news: hackers recently broke into Monster.com, the big online job search site, and stole millions of users' private information. What to do if you're a Monster.com user? Don't fall for a phishing email from the site or a potential employer. If someone emails you asking for your banking information in order to qualify for a job offer, don't be fooled! Never share any private information with an email sender.

One-quarter of online kids up to no good
As an example, Symantec just released a very interesting research study comparing attitudes about Internet safety between parents and kids. (Read the release here.) Among the tidbits: kids are spending twice as much time online as parents believe, and up to one-quarter are doing things online that they know their parents wouldn't approve of (ugh!). If you think your child is no longer online when they walk away from your family computer (and perhaps give you your first look at email in days) they can still connect to the Internet with their cell phone or other Web-enabled device.

Medicine offered in spam emails can kill
As always, I urge you not to fall for spam emails offering you everything from stocks about to "hit" or prescription drugs for low prices. But here's an article pointing out that you could be risking far more than identity theft when you click a link in spam; you could be risking your life!
